What is a junk file?

Junk files are files on your computer that once served a purpose, but have overstayed their welcome on your hard drive. These files include things like cached thumbnail images from previously viewed Internet sites, temporary Internet files that are not essential to your browsing, and program setup files that you don’t need once a program installation is complete. Many of these files will stick around indefinitely until you remove them. While junk files are generally benign, it’s still a good idea to clean them up from time to time to run your computer at its ideal speed and capacity.

What problems do junk files cause?

Junk files take up space on your hard drive. Because the available space on any hard drive is finite, it will eventually fill up over time and the quality of your experience will suffer when it begins to reach full capacity. Junk files can make programs run more slowly. They might also make it impossible to create new files or download new programs because the hard drive can’t fit any more data.

To do a comprehensive sweep of your junk files, it’s best to clean up your entire hard drive. This allows you to eliminate not only Internet files, but also get rid of items like program setup files and files you’ve placed in your recycling bin.
